Real-Life Comparisons[]
Burke and Monroe are similar to Phillip and Nancy Garrido - Both were abductor couples consisting of a dominant male and submissive female, the males had previous records of serial rape, weren't convicted on their first set of charges but incarcerated on their second set of charges, both couples met while the male was incarcerated and the female was visiting a relative in prison, abducted young, Caucasian female victims, held them captive in their homes, and the males repeatedly raped the victims.
They were both apparently inspired by Fred and Rosemary West - Both teams were dominated by the male (who was a ephebophilic serial killer and rapist jailed for prior sexual offenses before their murders), and the females were accomplices to serial rape and murder committed by their lovers and were sexually abused by their fathers. Like West, Burke also committed suicide, though he did it before getting caught and not afterwards.
Mutual Victims[]
- Dates further unspecified (all abducted in locations in Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, and Alabama): Abducted, raped, and killed nine girls during an eight-year span. They are:
- 2001: Brenda Carlisle
- 2002: Amy
- 2003: Michelle Kofflyn
- 2004: Gail Genesee
- 2005: Nicole Arbison
- 2006: Renee
- 2007: Unnamed victim
- 2008: Unnamed victim
- 2009: Emma Marker
- April 14, 2010: Rebecca Daniels (abducted and held captive; was rescued on May 5)
Notes[]
- Burke and Monroe are similar to two other killing teams from the show's past:
- Season Three
- Francis Goehring and Henry Frost ("Identity") - Both were killing teams that had an identical structure, featuring a dominant leader who raped at least one woman prior to their murders, killed all of the group's mutual victims by themselves, abducted women who they would rape, torture and kill, and committed suicide before leaving their submissive to kill their final victim; and a submissive partner who would help abduct and torture the dominant's victims, was sexually attracted to the dominant partner (though Frost's attraction for Goehring was unreciprocated) and died while attempting to kill a final woman. Burke is based on Goehring while Monroe is based on Frost.
- Season Four
- The Soul Mates ("Soul Mates") - Both were killing teams consisting of at least one dominant member who was an ephebophilic serial rapist (though only Burke was a killer, while both members of the Soul Mates raped and killed their victims) that killed their victims by strangling them after abducting, imprisoning, and repeatedly raping their victims over a period of time. Additionally, Burke, Harris and Baleman all raped at least one woman prior to their murders (though only Burke was convicted of doing so), and Monroe being left with Burke's last intended victim could be compared to Baleman killing the Soul Mates' last victim following Harris' arrest.
