Matthew "Matt" Keane was a serial killer and son of spree killer Leonard Keane who appeared posthumously in the Season One episode of Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, "Nighthawk".
Background[]
Keane was born on February 6, 1984, in Sand Springs, a suburb located in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he lived his entire life with his parents, Leonard and Elaine. Little of Keane's childhood is revealed, though it was mentioned he participated in the local little league baseball team, and once helped his father nurse a wounded nighthawk they found back to health; later in life, Leonard stated that when they let the recovered bird free, it was the happiest he had ever seen Keane.
In 2006, Keane (for unknown reasons) became a serial killer, murdering and dismembering young women. Even though Matthew kept some of his victims' body parts in his room after disposing of the rest, his parents somehow remained oblivious to his grisly deeds. It was only after Keane killed five that he was caught, arrested, and imprisoned for his crimes. While serving his sentence, Keane apparently gave several interviews (some of them with his father) before being killed by a fellow inmate.
Nighthawk[]
In March of 2011, Leonard, due to the pressure caused by financial problems, his wife being on her deathbed and the constant harassment he had to endure due to his relationship with Keane, snapped and began murdering people who resembled his son, who he had begun suffering hallucinations of. Ironically, all of Leonard's victims were killed with Keane's little league bat, which Leonard kept in his car along with pictures of happier times.
Modus Operandi[]
The details of Keane's crimes are left vague, but what is known is that he targeted young women, dismembered the young women he killed (either pre or post-mortem is never specified). It was also heavily implied that he may have committed necrophilia, at least with the severed head of Melanie Nolan, which he kept stored in a box.
Real-Life Comparison[]
Keane appeared to be based on Jeffrey Dahmer - Both were serial killers who targeted young victims, killed them in their homes, dismembered them, engaged in necrophilia with them (implied in Keane's case), stored their body parts (specifically their heads) in containers in their houses, their crimes generated great publicity after their arrests (which also led to scrutiny towards their parents), gave numerous interviews in prison, and were both murdered in prison by fellow inmates. Even their physical appearances are nearly identical.
Keane also appears to be inspired by Edmund Kemper - Both were serial killers targeting female victims, lived with their families, dismember their victims after killing them, engaged in necrophilia with their remains (implied in Keane's case), stored remains of victims at their homes, and participated in interviews from prison. Even their physical appearances are nearly identical.
Known Victims[]
- Unspecified dates from 2006 to 2007: Four unnamed victims
