Summary

The BAU travels to the Appalachian Trail in rural Virginia in search of a serial killer who is operating along that route. Meanwhile, Reid is faced with a dilemma regarding his mother.

• The episode was initially set to be directed by Thomas Gibson, the actor portraying Aaron Hotchner, but he was replaced following an altercation on the set with writer/producer Virgil Williams, for which he was temporarily suspended and then dismissed from the show.
• Dusty Sorg, the actor portraying the episode's unsub, had previously portrayed Vernon Butts, the accomplice to real-life serial killer and rapist William Bonin, in the 2010 film Freeway Killer.
