Kai Veneer is a serial-turned-spree killer who carried out a series of killings known as the Moving Day Murders. He appeared in the Criminal Minds: Evolution episode "Homesick".
History[]
Born sometime during the early 2000s, Kai Veneer lived and worked with his parents in a hotel known as the Cosgrove Inn, where his father worked as a manager. However, tragedy struck one day when an accident involving a broken pipe led to several hotel rooms being flooded with carbon monoxide, resulting in the deaths of seven guests, including his mother. The hotel was shut down and Kai and his father became homeless. They applied to be tenants at various properties throughout the city but were turned down at each one due to a low income and bad credit score.
Unable to find work or another place to live in, Kai's father committed suicide in early 2023, leaving Kai on his lonesome. This caused him to snap, and he started using his occupation as an HVAC technician to gain access to the homes he was unable to rent and kill their tenants soon after they moved in, claiming three victims this way.
Homesick[]
Kai is first seen targeting Alexa Flynn and Janice James. Per his M.O., he cut the power and circulated carbon dioxide throughout the house. After separating the two women, he suffocated Alexa, then Janice, in surprise attacks while in full disguise. He's next seen at the home of his next targets, married couple Keith and Charlotte Noyer, who are expecting a baby. Once Kai gets Keith to sign the necessary paperwork, he unlocks a window so he can gain entry. He's later seen donning his tank and mask once he's identified as the unsub. Late at night, Kai creeps in and jumps the couple. He tries to kill Keith first, but Keith puts up a fight and gets Charlotte to run. Kai knocks Keith out and then tries to kill Charlotte, but Keith wakes up in time to stop him. As Kai is wrapping plastic around Keith’s head, the FBI stop him, and Kai holds him hostage. Rossi pistol-whips Kai to the ground and arrests him. He's later incarcerated.
Modus Operandi[]
Using his job and knowledge as an HVAC Technician, Kai would tour around the new homes of his victims on moving days and wait for their arrival. Once the victims moved in, he would bring tanks of carbon monoxide to poison them, and a rebreather filled with oxygen attached to a mask he would wear for himself in order to breathe and strike fear to his victims. Either during the struggle of breathing in carbon monoxide or afterwards, the victims were then suffocated with stretch wrap plastic that was wrapped around their heads.
Profile[]
The unsub is a male between ages of 18 and 25. He may be a part of a building trade profession, such as heating, ventilation, or air conditioning. Failing to charm and harm, his esteem is so low he gasses his victims so they're too weak to fight back. His murder weapon is clear plastic and he brings his own oxygen tank so he's the last thing the victims see. As he wants to see terror in the victims'eyes as they die, he modifies his gas mask by wearing a costume mask over it, because he doesn't want to show the real him.
Real-Life Comparison[]
Kai appears to be primarily inspired by Pravin and Virendra Govin - All are Indian-American murderers with original family work in hotels, targeted families, were motivated by seeing their victims as competition, committed their murders in home invasions, killed their victims by some form of asphyxiation, and wrapped something around their heads during the killings (Kai used plastic stretch wrap, the Govins used duct tape).
Kai also appears to be inspired by Kim Kyu-soo - Both are murderers with families lines tracing to Asia, their murders were tied to rental properties (Veneer's father was a hotel manager, Kim was a landlord), both targeted female roommates in their 20s, and the victims were suffocated with pliable plastic around their heads.
Kai appears to be inspired by Richard Ramirez - Both are serial killers of homeowners who briefly lived in hotels around the times of their sprees, cut the power in homes of the victims for stealth and terrorizing them, targeted at least one couple, and staged the crime scenes for shock value.
