Erica Messer is an American television writer, producer and story editor.
Background[]
Originally from Washington, D.C., where she lived many years, her family moved to Ocean City, Maryland, during her teen years. As a result, she attended Salisbury University located in Salisbury, Maryland, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts.
Messer's next move was to Los Angeles for work. She had always held jobs related to the TV business, starting with a temporary job for the Casting department at Fox Broadcasting Company, from where she moved to her permanent position as the Assistant to the Vice President of drama series at Fox.
Messer's passion in college, however, was production, so when an opening happened for the writers' assistant position in the series Party of Five, she took it. Since then, she has written episodes of television series such as Alias, The O.C., Charmed, and Criminal Minds.
She has acted as a story editor on Alias and executive story editor on The O.C. and was co-producer of two television shows: Charmed and Criminal Minds.
As a result of Edward Allen Bernero leaving Criminal Minds at the end of the sixth season of the series, she was appointed as showrunner of the show. She was later appointed as showrunner of the show's short-lived spin-off series, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.
