Cyrus Lebrun was a possibly prolific serial killer, stalker, abductor, and arms trafficker who appeared as the overarching antagonist of Criminal Minds: Evolution. He was the uncle of Elias Voit.

Background[]

Lebrun lived in Falls River, North Carolina, working as an arms trafficker for local gangs. He killed people for his criminal activities, but he also enjoying raping and murdering women in addition for his own pleasure. In 1992, Lebrun was given custody of his nephew Lee Duval following the deaths of Lee’s parents in an apartment fire that was caused by Lee. Lebrun beat Lee, locked in closets for days while passing his meals through the door on occasion, and terrorized Lee with murdered animals, all to subjugate Lee to his dangerous house. Lebrun saw an opportunity in and conditioned him into being a loyal accomplice to his murders, having Lee participate in cleaning the scenes and tracking the investigations to throw off police.

At some point, Lebrun sold guns to Mala Noche members Silvio Herrera and Juan Gutierrez, who were accompanied by Maria Jones. Lebrun became aware of Silvio and Juan’s relationship, blackmailing them to keep it a secret. Lebrun chose Maria to kill next and kidnapped her, raping her and beating her during her captivity. While she was held captive, she convinced Lee to let her go, but she stabbed his shoulder with a hunting knife and attempted to kill him, believing he was as much a danger to her as Lebrun and didn't mean to release her. Lebrun took the knife from her and stabbed her to death, hitting Lee and saying she should've killed him out of Lebrun hating his disobedience. Cyrus framed Silvio, threatening to kill Juan with photos of him and threatening messages disguised as prayers sent to Silvio, as a warning Lebrun was stalking Juan. Sometime afterwards, Lee was prepared to leave until he was confronted by Lebrun, who accused him of telling the Police the location of Maria’s body. They fought, with Lee gaining the upper hand and attempted to kill Cyrus, but relented and left Lebrun behind. Lee eventually renamed himself Elias Voit and began committing murders himself and later created a network of serial killers.

Criminal Minds: Evolution[]

Modus Operandi[]

Profile[]

No official profile was made of Lebrun as they were more focused on his nephew. However, his victimology of older affluent men and younger disenfranchise women suggests he's asserting dominance by killing his male victims and satisfying some form of sexual sadism over his female victims.

Real-Life Comparisons[]

Lebrun appears to be inspired by Gordon Northcott - Both are serial killers and rapists who operated from rural properties in states one of the two American coasts, brutalized their nephews into being accomplices, held victims captive for long periods time to rape them, dissolved victims' remains with caustic substances, and died as a consequence of their crimes (Lebrun was killed by his nephew as retribution for making him an accomplice, while Northcott was hanged for his murders).

Known Victims[]

  • Unspecified dates:
    • Grant Howe
    • At least 3 unnamed victims
  • Early 2000's: Elias Voit (his nephew; physically abused and briefly held captive; assaulted when he intended to leave)
  • Pre-2003: Maria Jones (abducted, raped, beaten, tortured, and stabbed with a hunting knife)
  • c. 2003-2022: Juan Gutierrez (stalked only)
  • 2022: Silvio Herrera (framed for Maria's murder and attempted to get executed; was exonerated)

Notes[]

  • Lebrun appears to have been partially inspired by Joe Mulford ("Open Season") - Both were serial killers (possibly in Joe's case) who took custody of their nephew(s) following their siblings' deaths, raised them away from civilization in wooded areas, taught them how to kill, and their crimes were not discovered until after their deaths.
