The Browning Hi-Power (often shortened to Browning HP) is a semi-automatic pistol designed by Browning Arms.
History[]
The HP was first designed in 1914 after the French Army requested a new service pistol. Belgium firearms manufacturing company Fabrique Nationale Herstal (known more commonly as FN Herstal) commissioned firearm inventor John Browning (creator of the iconic M1911 pistol, which the HP is based) to create the pistol. Browning began designing what would eventually become the Browning Hi-Power (named for its high-capacity magazines, which doubled that of most pistols at the time) in 1923 and two prototypes were produced. One with a lock-breeched recoil system design was chosen for further development and testing. After years of modeling and testing, the Browning Hi-Power went into service and was used by the Belgium military, but the French Army ultimately rejected the HP. Despite this, the HP still became a very popular pistol and continues to be used by both military and law enforcement agencies worldwide.
