Criminal Minds Wiki

Brian J. Garrity is a conspiracy theorist and a former neighbor of Emily Prentiss. He appeared in the Season Fifteen episode "Saturday", before later resurfacing in Criminal Minds: Evolution.

Background[]

Little is revealed about Garrity, except, to Prentiss' recollection, he worked at a fishery, had a failed marriage to a woman named Sheila, who took out a restraining order on him, and lived with his cat he walked around on a leash. He was neighbors with Prentiss, in spite of her having lived elsewhere for years after.

On Criminal Minds[]

Garrity files a lawsuit against Prentiss and the government on fifth amendment grounds, arguing she was spying on him. Prentiss was confident she could meet Garrity at her office so he'd back off, but the moment he arrived, he showed up with a prominent demeanor, brought a "crime board" to make his case, and annoyed the other agents on staff. Garrity goes into a lengthy tirade of his beliefs of him being watched, citing technology around his neighborhood and in his home. Exasperated as Prentiss is, she tries to explain to him he believes in the targeted individual conspiracy theory. He responds with inquiring about her faking her death, which she does her best to explain in earnest. When Lewis arrives to speak with Prentiss, he looks her up and down unnervingly, as she reminds him of his ex-wife. As Prentiss has Lewis deal with him, Lewis smooth-talks him into dropping the lawsuit by making him believe he's right about his delusions, but to direct them away from the FBI.

On Evolution[]

Garrity returned when he was confirmed to have released extremist propaganda questioning the assassination of Deputy Director Doug Bailey. Prentiss discreetly met him in a nearby parking garage, and she politely requested he back off, as Bailey's family was still grieving. Garrity accepted this and agreed, as he remembered Sheila telling him to not focus on problems that aren't there. He mentioned his plans for bookwriting before they parted ways. Garrity later called again for another meeting, as he was digging into the Gold Star investigation and wanted to reveal details. Concerned he would put himself in danger and others on the line, her suspicions were met when she saved him from being beaten by three thugs. Police arrived, assuming she was guilty, Garrity literally pointing the finger at her to reinforce their suspicions. Prentiss was arrested and booked, and after Rossi posted her bail, Garrity dropped the charges. Garrity called again, admitting he was coerced into setting her up when Sheila's life was threatened. She's horrified and desperately interested to realize Garrity himself is investigating Gold Star, but he goes off the grid before he tells her more. Prentiss has Tyler Green call some of his friends to have him discreetly detained by local police in the Rockies. Garrity repeats his name like a prisoner of war and invokes his right to counsel several times. When Prentiss demands to know what he knows about Gold Star, Garrity denies all he told her and calls her the crazy one. He does offer one warning he was told to pass along so he wouldn't be jailed: "Teresa is in danger".
